I say that rant you hear wasn't me. I did speak on Lovelight, as the band was trying to get going, and when the band started playing I shut up. then some bearded gleef got on the mike and did his inane rap. I've been blamed for it many times because they don't have the whole thing on the internet archives. I happen to have the whole thing with me talking and I've burned a CD of it.

Pigpen said, as the equipment guys were hassling the sound, "Tell them a story, Babbs." And Babbs got on the microphone and told a story and, just like always when he starts yakking on the microphone, the boys in the band step up and start playing, anything to shut Babbs up. Pigpen used this ploy many times to get the music started. I know this to be true because I was there!

VIETNAM STORY DVD

I'm reading a story from my Vietnam novel. It's called Lost A Bird Gained A Bird. In front of a tremendously appreciative audience. Phil Dietz does a warmup story, If Shakespeare Played Golf. There's some photos of when I was in dah Nam, as it's called. This is the newest latest bestest off the Video editing and DVD authoring computer setup. My rice bowl thanks you.

DIG THE SOUND VERSION

Yes, it is the same story as on the "Lost A Bird Gained A Bird" DVD, but this is a CD, sound only, so you can carry it with you, play it in your walkman, play it in your car, play it in your kitchen, your den, living room, bedroom, bathroom, wherever you have a CD player. This way you don't have to sit and watch the picture which is essentially merely the Kapn rappin', but to be on the safe side you should have both the CD and the DVD, cover all the bases.

A German TV crew came over to interview me for a German PBS program on psychedelics, all about psychedelics way back then, and (as Kesey wrote, "Cassady wanted to Be Out There When . . . into the future . . behind the wheel and out in front of the grille at the same time . . .) all about when. That gave me the title: THEN WHEN. We filmed in front of the old bus, Further, out at Kesey's farm. Mike Hagen filmed the filming and Mike's film is the DVD.

The DVD called "then when" is so purely pranksterish-but yet now skypilotesque it is hard to describe. First, the idea of filming the filming is hilarious. I am wondering, did the filming of the filming idea come out of a need for documenting that a film crew filmed you? Actually probably not since in the past everything was and will continue to be filmed.

Keith, we learned quite a while back to do our own filming of these filmings because we found out that though the filmers always promise to give us a copy they never do.

Your disposition during that interview/monologue / ? is quite the performance if you do not mind me saying. I'm pretty astute on the prankster/skypilot scene for an outsider, but I could swear you were putting him on with your candor --either that or you got prepped for the scene. It seemed you went seamlessly from someone or a persona that they expected from you into some very deep and cogent commentary on what it is all about "it" being approach on life, history and its relative position in today's weird strange world. It was awesome. Maybe I'm seeing stuff that was unintentional and I could be but man, some of the passages are truly quotable
